October 25.    Teresa shared, “Women’s groups have often had an issue with St Paul’s statement about being subject to their husbands.  I myself also get positively hot under the collar by groups who stress the importance of the man as the head of the home. I felt affirmed and vindicated by Pope Francis statement in AMORIS LAETITIA where he stresses the equality, even mutual subjection of men and women. I believe it is my duty as a missionary to witness to this.”

Scripture:  Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Eph 5:21.  Pope Francis:   Paul tells women to be subject to your husbands.  This passage mirrors the cultural categories of the time, but our concern is not with the cultural matrix but with the revealed message it conveys. As St John Paul II wisely observed, “love excludes every kind of subjection whereby the wife might become a servant or a slave of the husband. The unity which they should establish through marriage is a reciprocal donation of self, and also a mutual subjection. AL 156
