June 8. Salt and Light. “Do you think those old ladies in the church are ‘salt of the earth’ people?” Mary asked her son Patrick. “Maybe, but when I hear them complaining it makes me wonder if they’ve lost the saltiness.  I prefer to look at the SVP who you don’t see in church all the time but are out there doing stuff for others.” “Maybe the light of the world people are those who lead the organisations, helping others, or teaching. Don’t you also think bishop William is one of those.”

Jesus said to the disciples, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste how shall its saltiness be restored? You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. From Matt 5:13-16

Pope Francis. We are free to apply our intelligence towards things evolving positively or towards adding new ills, new causes of suffering and real setbacks.   This is what makes for the excitement and drama of human history in which freedom, growth, salvation and love can blossom or lead towards decadence and mutual destruction.  LS 79
