4 January. Sunday Epiphany A.   The revelation of Christ to the whole world. See:  Fr Sylvester began his homily with a little story.   He called it “Out of the Mouths!” Daniel aged 5, returned from children’s liturgy with a new perspective on the Christmas story.  He had learned all about the wise men from the east who brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Daniel was so excited he just had to tell his parents, ‘I learned all about the very first Christmas. There wasn’t a Santa Claus way back then, so these three blokes on camels had to deliver all the toys. And Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer with his nose so bright wasn’t there yet, so they had to have this big light in the sky to find their way around.”

The story of the three wise men and King Herod is a story about good and evil, about selfishness and openness, about strangers and mercy, acceptance and generosity. We celebrate how God revealed himself as a God of justice and merciful love to all people.  We both rejoice and are challenged to act as the wise men did, to follow a star that leads to God.  At the beginning of this New Year what is your star, the aim and purpose of your life at this time?  Share together.

JUDGE, reflect and share :  Scripture: When they had heard the king they went and behold the star which they had seen in the East went before them till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star they rejoiced exceedingly. Matthew 2:1-12.   All nations shall fall prostrate before you, O Lord. Before him all kings shall fall prostrate, all nations shall serve him, for he shall save the needy when they cry, the poor and those who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and the needy.  Ps 72.  Pope Francis: The People of God journeys tirelessly towards the fullness of his kingdom of justice, love, forgiveness and mercy. MM 14.  Pope Leo: “Peace be with you” ( Jn 20:19, 21) is his Word that does not merely desire peace, but truly brings about a lasting transformation in those who receive it, and consequently in all of reality.  For this reason, the Apostles’ successors give voice every day throughout the world to the most silent of revolutions: “Peace be with you!”

ACT: Decide on possible appropriate action towards peace-building or peace-keeping.   Conclude with prayer for peace amongst the nations.   The Jubilee year has officially ended and the lost Holy Door is closed on 6 January – the 12th day of Christmas. The Hope that does no disappoint” must continue in the days and months ahead. Are the dramaric events of 3 January, the US’ invasion and capture of the president of Nicaragua, a sign of hope or of peace? Reflect and share.
