January 20.  Mr Dlamini asked his family group, “Why were the Jews, Pharisees, scribes and others wanting to destroy Jesus?  What was Jesus doing whenever he was with them?  Was he really a trouble-maker or acting out of compassion for the down-trodden ones and the poor?  Was Jesus presenting a new vision of liberation for everyone that was contrary to the Jewish established order with its narrow and overly strict laws?  The Romans oppressed the Jewish people but the Jewish leaders in fact also oppressed their own poor people.

Jesus entered the synagogue and a man was there with a withered hand. Jesus asked the Pharisees,“is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?”  They were silent. Jesus looked at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart.  He said to the man, “stretch out your hand and it was restored.  Then the Pharisees went out to plot how to destroy him.” Mark 3:1-6.  

Pope Francis:   if we accept the great principle that there are rights born of our inalienable human dignity, we can rise to the challenge of envisaging a new humanity.  We can aspire to a world that provides land, housing and work for all. This is the true  path of peace which is only possible on the basis of a global ethic of solidarity, cooperation, interdependence and shared responsibility. FT127. Reflect and share.
