July 24.  Sunday 17C.  Fr Patrick said, “When Pope Francis gave us Amoris Laetitia, his letter about the family, he also wrote about the elderly in their families. They should be cared for and not be seen as a burden, even though there are times that they may be becoming difficult to relate to or possibly ill. Not all the elderly are grandparents and not all grandparents are elderly.  Many grandparents live alone, some live with their children, as was normal in different times, but wherever they are they all need to be remembered from time to time and today is such a time, and we can do so also in honour of the grandparents of Jesus.

Scripture:   Read and reflect on Luke’s version of the Our Father.  When you pray say, Our Father.  Luke 11:1-13  Pope Francis:  The elderly who are vulnerable and dependent are at times unfairly exploited simply for economic advantage.  AL48. In old age they will still bear fruit.” Ps 92:15) These words of the Psalmist are glad tidings, a true gospel that we can proclaim to all on this second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.   They run counter to what the world thinks about this stage of life, but also to the attitude of grim resignation shown by some of us elderly people, who harbour few expectations for the future.   A long life – so the Bible teaches – is a blessing, and the elderly are not outcasts to be shunned, but living signs of the goodness of God, who bestows life in abundance.   Blessed is the house where an older person lives! Blessed is the family that honours the elderly! From Message for 2nd World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly 2022.
